I’ll keep the safari portions of the blog brief and try to provide mostly photos instead of words, because I would not be able to do this place justice using words. I’ll let the photos tell the story.

Morning Safari

We received our wake up call at 4:30 am, breakfast by 5 am, and off on our morning driving safari at 5:30 am. Before leaving for the safari, this Malacite Kingfisher flew into one of the windows of the building. The ranger picked up the bird, inspected it, and handed it to Rey. The bird eventually flew away.

This photo shows our group minus JV, our ranger guide (behind the camera), and the safari vehicle.

Evening Safari

During the evening safari, Rey spotted a wild dog JV was extremely excited about this. They are very rare. We spot and wait for what seems like more then 30 minutes. We can see three to four dogs, all lying and barely visible. I begin to wonder why we are just sitting here. Soon, the dogs start to move. Two of the dog approach us but hide behind two separate bushes. We wait a little longer. Suddenly, we see more dogs and three pups, all heading towards us. Some of the adult dogs come close to the vehicle. As we watch, JV had radioed one of the other vehicles, which arrives to see the dogs.

Sunset

We leave and head to our destination, the top of a hill, in time for a drink, snack, and watch the sun set.

During the drive back, JV pulls out a large spot light and randomly shines it down the road, all the sides of the road, and in the top of the trees. I assume he is looking for lions and leopards. After driving for a while, he stops, backs ups a few feet, and asks Liza to shine it at one spot in the tree. JV gets out of the truck, walks over to the tree, and returns with a chameleon. We are all amazed that he was able to spot it in the tree as we drove by. After letting each of us hold, more accurately, letting it climb on all of us, JV returns the chameleon to the tree. As he walks away from the tree, we can barely see the chameleon, and are all still amazed how he was able to spot it while driving.
